Is Kasdan’s Fight To Keep Willow Delusional?
Is Willow canceled or is it on hiatus? If you ask showrunner Jon Kasdan, if Willow has been canceled, he’ll tell you it is ‘absolutely not’, with some word ju-jitsu proclaiming a volume II is still out there. While also admitting, “A decision was made last week to release our main cast for other series opportunities that may arise for them in the coming year.” Well, that’s great! So Disney+ didn’t can the show. They are actually liberating the show to grow and become something greater. Kasdan continues, “With all the TV and movies in production around the world, it feels unfair to limit an actor’s availability without a clear sense of when you’re going to need them again. It’s further triviliased by the simple reality that the scripts we’ve been working on require just as many actors with whom no such contractual hold exists.” Whatever that means. You can always tell when someone just can’t let something go.
Daredevil Recasts Character for Born Again
As Disney begins shooting the whopping 18-episode season of Daredevil in the north end of New York City, the news is leaking all over. From Jon Bernthal returning as The Punisher, to word that the Karen Page character may be recast. One character that is confirmed to have been recast is Wilson Fisk’s beloved Vanessa who was portrayed on the Netflix run by Ayelet Zurer. The new actress is Sandrine Holt. Her recent acting credits include numerous series, Mayor of Kingstown, Better Call Saul, and The Expanse. It seems clear at this point, if Vanessa is being recast, Foggy and Page are next.
Will Disney+ Show Kaiser Karl Be Safe For Kids?
As Disney+ becomes more and more of a must-have streaming service, the question of family-friendly-only movies has been answered with more and more R-rated titles being added in the US in the summer of 2022. Now Disney+ is developing adult content that may blur the lines with a docudrama series, Kaiser Karl. Currently filming in France, Monaco, and Italy, Kaiser Karl features Daniel Brühl as Karl Lagerfeld.
The series covers the decadent life of the 70s fashion designer. The showrunner’s media package promotes Kaiser Karl as, “Steeped in queer subculture and the oh-so-Parisian world of fashion.” It looks like good adult entertainment, but even if the show doesn’t include adult scenes or language with less than an R-rating, will Disney+ warn parents of the adult themes? If nothing else, parents reading this should be aware of the show and may want to review the content first before allowing their kids viewing access.
Pacifist Marvel Superhero In Disney+ Series
What if there was a superhero that is immortal, invulnerable, can’t get a woman pregnant, and refused to use their superpowers to fight villains because they are a pacifist? You may call them useless, Marvel calls him Wonderman. You might also think this character is some new insult to conservatives by left-wing creators but the truth is Wonderman has been around for decades and was created by none other than Stan Lee.
Wonderman is coming to Disney+. Not as a typical action-oriented Daredevil-style series, but as a subversive satire. It’s just so crazy, it just might work.
On a serious note, the show does seem to have the components to work as a satire. Wonderman’s canon places him in California as a working actor. What doesn’t align with the comedic element is the choices of actors and directors that come from more serious backgrounds in the entertainment industry. Demetrius Grosse will portray the Grim Reaper, the brother, and arch-enemy of Wonderman played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Directors Stella Meghie and Daniel Destin Cretton have no background in slapstick, cerebral or nuanced comedy.
The strongest indicator to back up the rumors of the series being a satire is the head writer, Andrew Guest whose credits include Community, 30 Rock, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Wonderman made his first appearance in Marvel comics Avengers issue #9 as a villain and upon his death came back as a hero. He made his animated debut in 1999’s Avengers: United They Stand which followed many aspects of the original comic books storyline yet takes place well after the Avengers have retired. Wonderman’s comatose brain waves or ethos are used as a means to combat Ultron through Vision (Age of Ultron anybody?) and Wonderman is made out as an inept bafoon throughout the series.
