Pop Culture Bites: Donald Glovers’ New Amazon Original Swarm
Watching the teaser trailer, it has a definite Misery feel while the name Swarm is a play on Beyoncé’s most active fans, the bee hive. This social commentary thriller is the product of Donald Glover. (Just don’t tell Steven King.) Prior to this latest project, Glover signed an eight-figure deal with Amazon in February 2021. As his popular series Atlanta came to an end he explored the idea of fans who take it too far based on his own alter ego experience through Childish Gambino. Glover bounced the idea off of a colleague Janine Nabers. The end result is Amazon greenlit this King of Comedy like project that started soon after Atlanta ended. The swarm began shooting in the spring of 2022 under the working title, Hive.
The story follows Dre played by Dominique Fishback as a music fan obsessed with a fictional pop star (think Childish Gambino),
If you enjoyed all four seasons of Atlanta, the good news is Glover is using just about everyone involved behind the camera. From the producers to the writers and directors. Names such as Adamma Ebo, Jamal Olori, Ibra Ake to his own brother Stephen Glover are a part of The Swarm. One new writer of note is former President Obama’s daughter, Malia who enjoys being credited in episode 5. Glover took time to praise her directly in an interview with Variety.
I feel like she’s just somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon. Her writing style is great.
Stan culture has been around long before the expression was coined in recent years, but perhaps never covered to the extent in cinema than with The Swarm. Watch the series starting March 17th, 2023 on Amazon Prime Video.
Invincible: Season 2 Trailer Easter Eggs
Talk about the ultimate spoiler-free trailer with Easter eggs! Amazon Prime Video dropped a trailer with a twist for Invincible: Season 2. It begins with the Invincible and Allen the Alien enjoying a friendly lunch at Burger Mart.
As we eves drop on their conversation, it slowly becomes evident, we are not watching an excerpt from the upcoming season, the characters are actually breaking the fourth wall and answering the question of when Invincible: Season 2 will arrive on Amazon Prime Video. They literally state it’s coming in late 2023.
One eagle eye YT commenter nailed the Easter eggs in the trailer: Angstrom Levi is having a burger with himself & a younger Atom Eve is bored on her phone while her real dad (who never takes off his lab coat) is sipping his morning coffee.
The Whale Streams February 21
The Brenasaunce continues. The wait is over for the much talked about film, The Whale a semi-autobiographical film about writer Samual D Hunter and stars Brendan Fraser. It’s not free, but it is available to watch at home for those who couldn’t find it in theaters.
Seth Rogen Dishes on Season 4 of The Boys
Seth Rogen confirms The Boys Season 4 is going over the top again. The Boys was Amazon Prime Video’s top streaming program in 2022 garnering 10.5 billion minutes of views according to Nielsen. Season after season the show improves the star power and expands the story. Season three featured Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy. Season four has another heavy hitter added to the line-up with Jeffery Dean Morgan playing a ‘badass’ according to The Boys star Nathan Mitchell who portrays Black Noir.
Other new Characters in The Boys for season 4 are Firecracker (Valorie Curry) and Sister Sage (Susan Heyward). Tweets from Amazon infer that Firecracker has pyrotechnical abilities (no surprise there), while Sister Sage may have either short-distance time travel teleportation or simply short-term future casting.
