Here’s what’s news with Hulu this May 2023.

Before You Watch Catherine The Great

Hulu features the return of its satirical comedy The Great this month for its third season. It’s a Russian period piece on Catherine The Great and her rise to power. If you haven’t watched it, don’t expect something historically accurate. Expect laughs that leave you with no misgivings over how historically inaccurate it is. Still, who was Catherine The Great? Catherine the Great was a Russian monarch who ruled from 1762 until her death in 1796. She was born on May 2, 1729, in Stettin, Prussia (now Szczecin, Poland), as Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg. She married the future Emperor Peter III of Russia in 1745, and upon his ascension to the throne in 1762, she orchestrated a coup d’état and became Empress Catherine II. During her reign, Catherine worked to modernize Russia and expanded its territory through military conquests. She was also a patron of the arts and literature, and is remembered as one of the most powerful and successful female leaders in history. The Great returns on May 12th.

Atlanta’s Freaknik Festival’s NSFW footage: A look back at the infamous event

Hulu has a documentary this month that’s drawn some controversy. The Freaknik festival in Atlanta ran from 1983 to 1999. It was originally a small gathering of HBCU students, but it quickly grew into a massive spring break celebration that drew tens of thousands of people from all over the country. While Freaknik was initially seen as a harmless way for young people to let loose and have fun, it soon became known for its wild parties, uninhibited behavior, and even violence.

The 1994 Freaknik was the largest and most infamous year of the festival. Over 200,000 people attended the event, and the city of Atlanta was overwhelmed by the crowds. There were reports of widespread looting, vandalism, and violence. The city government eventually declared a state of emergency and called in the National Guard to help control the crowds.

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in Freaknik, with several documentaries and books being released about the event. This has led to some people, particularly Gen Xers who attended Freaknik in its heyday, to express concern that NSFW footage of them from the event may resurface.

While it is true that some NSFW footage of Freaknik does exist, it was much more than just a series of wild parties. Freaknik was also a time for young people to come together and celebrate their culture, and for many people, it was a positive and life-changing experience.

Of course, there is no denying that Freaknik had its dark side. The event was often associated with crime, violence, and even death. However, it is important to remember that Freaknik was a product of its time, and that it reflected the social and economic conditions of the early 1990s.

Looking back, Freaknik was a complex event that cannot be easily summed up. It was a time of joy and celebration, but it was also a time of violence and chaos. It was a time of hope and possibility, but it was also a time of despair and frustration. Freaknik was all of these things and more, and it is a part of Atlanta’s history that will never be forgotten.

After checking it out on Hulu, you may be interested in learning more about Freaknik, I recommend the book “Freaknik: The Ultimate Guide to the Largest Black Party in America”, or visit the website www.freaknik.com
