David Fincher Weighs in on Mindhunter: Season 3
If David Fincher can be taken at his word, fans of Mindhunter can now point the finger at Netflix for its cancellation. According to Forbes, Fincher indicated that Netflix didn’t see enough ROI. It simply cost too much to justify a season three.
I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment (for Season 3). I don’t blame them, they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank [his black and white film about 1930s Hollywood] the way I wanted to do it, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer. It’s a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways.
Fincher kept it classy and professional indicating he has a good relationship with Netflix. He should, or at least they should since Fincher can be attributed as the catalyst of Netflix success with his 2013 House of Cards series based on the 1989 novel by Michael Dobbs.
Netflix Kills Gorillaz Movie Permanently
Alternative virtual rock band Gorillaz’ four fictional members have been dealt a death blow by Netflix. Its origin human member, Damon Albarn, and co-creator Jamie Hewlett have been working towards a full-feature film for years with an unnamed Netflix executive.
Unfortunately, in February of 2023, Albarn confirmed in a presser with German media outlet HUMO his Netflix contact (Phil Rynda?) was let go in the 2022 animation division terminations. Subsequently, the long-awaited Gorrilaz movie is permanently dead. Albarn gave this detailed response to the question if the film was permanently suspended.
Yes. That is to say, and without naming names because the whole matter has not yet been settled: the streaming platform for which we were making the film has withdrawn. They started to panic because they were making too much content and decided to cut back on their movie offerings. And, as has been classic Hollywood practice for decades, the guy we were working with has moved on to another company. From then on you have lost your guardian angel, and there seems to be a bad smell hanging on you. Hollywood is quite territorial: if a new guy comes along, he must and will have a different opinion, even if he secretly agrees with his predecessor.
With Jamie Hewlett’s past proven success with Tank Girl moving from graphic novel to the big screen, there’s still hope yet that another streaming platform will be hungry for bankable animated content.
Netflix Sweeps 2022
According to Nielsen, Netflix has swept all the top ten slots in streaming original programs. In fact, Netflix occupied 13 of the top 15 slots. The big winner for 2022 was Stranger Things at #1 with a whopping 52 billion minutes of viewing while a big surprise as #2 is Ozark at 31 billion minutes viewed.
All remaining contenders from #3 down came in under 20 million views leaving the top two in a league of their own. At #3 is Wednesday, followed by Cobra Kai, Bridgerton, Virgin River, Dahmer, Love is Blind, Inventing Anna, and The Crown at #10.
Netflix Ending Shared Accounts
A paid sharing system is on the horizon for Netflix account holders that have been sharing their user names and passwords with friends and family. The news dropped from Michael Pachter, Managing Director of Wedbush Securities during a Q4 earnings report.
Netflix intends to restrict users from sharing passwords outside their homes. Similar to adding additional cable boxes or phone lines in a home, the sharing has no limits inside a household address, and no further. Adding additional members will come at a cost, but obviously no more than a new basic account.
Netflix intends to block any account with repeated attempts to log in outside of the account holder’s home. This appears to account for a user who travels by allowing that specific known device to access the service outside your home IP. Netflix will also employ a watch-type service that analyzes logins monthly.
In a recent shareholder letter, Netflix speculated that over 100 million households are ‘account sharing’. This is good news for Netflix and its shareholders as the subscriber base can only go up from there. The account-sharing detection service is being rolled out in the first quarter of 2023. Meanwhile, pundits are already claiming that you can easily get around the password-sharing security by simply verifying any login attempt with the user when a four-digit code is sent to your phone.
Witcher: Blood Origin Slayed by Critics and Viewers
It wasn’t Henry Cavell that doomed the series, but he did see the writing on the wall. The Witcher prequel series seemed to not only deviate from game cannon, but it also took the woke approach to storytelling and appears to be getting roasted by critics for a bland story, and viewers for going the route of woke political storytelling.
From Rotten Tomatoes to Metacritic, the overall ratings are below 15 percent approval. Don’t even visit a Reddit forum, the comments range from bitter disappointment to harsh criticisms of the writers for taking extreme liberties with the source material and going with a modern social justice message. While the show streamed in the top ten for its first week and a half, it vanished thereafter.
