Pride Month is in June every year. In 2024, it begins on Saturday, June 1, and ends on Sunday, June 30. Pride celebrations – including parades, festivals, parties, and picnics – are held throughout the month across the U.S. New York hosts the country’s largest pride parades each year, with some 5 million people attending in 2009.
LGBTQ Pride Month is a commemoration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community that is part celebration and part protest. It is often associated with massive parades and parties that honor the community’s joys and accomplishments. The rallies, marches, and political actions can be just as important to draw attention to the issues still facing the community. LGBTQ Pride Month traces its roots back to the 1969 Stonewall riots, which started on June 28, 1969. The first Pride marches started the following year, on June 28, 1970, to commemorate the multiday riots, and these one-day celebrations eventually evolved into a full month of LGBTQ pride.
“It’s important to share that the fight for equity and justice is ongoing, and everyone has a role to play. By educating ourselves, supporting marginalized communities, and advocating for inclusive policies, we can all contribute to a more just and compassionate world,” explained Nicholas.
“Together,” he added, “we can create a society where everyone is valued and respected, regardless of their identity.”
Dr. Elijah, why did you write Madoodle, your new children’s book series?
I wrote Madoodle to provide young readers with stories that reflect the diverse experiences of children today. My goal is to create relatable characters and narratives that promote acceptance, inclusion, and empathy. Through Madoodle, I want to show children and adults alike, that it’s okay to be different and that everyone has unique qualities that make them special.
What impact do you hope the books will have?
I hope Madoodle will inspire and educate children about the importance of embracing diversity and standing up for what is right. I want the series to foster a sense of self-worth and confidence in young readers, helping them understand that their unique qualities are their strengths. I aim to contribute to a more accepting and compassionate society by addressing topics like inclusion and empathy.
What are you most passionate about when it comes to your work life and personal life?
In my work life, I am most passionate about advocating for health equity and justice for transgender and non-binary individuals to include veterans. I believe in creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and supported. In my personal life, I cherish the relationships I have with my family and friends, particularly my amazing mother, who has always been my source of strength and inspiration. Balancing these passions helps me stay grounded and motivated.
Why is there a need for a National Day of Silence? And what does it mean to you?
The National Day of Silence is essential because it brings attention to the silencing and erasure of LGBTQ+ voices, particularly in schools and communities. It is a powerful form of protest that highlights the need for safe and inclusive environments. To me, it signifies solidarity and the collective power of standing together to demand change and respect for all individuals, regardless of their identity.
Why did you start 100 Black Trans Men? How much progress have you and the group made for Trans Rights?
I started 100 Black Trans Men to create a supportive community and amplify the voices of Black transgender men. Our organization has made significant progress in advocating for trans rights, including providing leadership development programs and promoting health equity. Through our rebranding to the Global Trans Equity Project (GTEP), we have expanded our reach to support all transgender and non-binary individuals, continuing to push for inclusive policies and societal change.
Tell me about your role as a prominent thought leader.
As a thought leader, I leverage my experiences and platform to influence public discourse and advocate for marginalized communities. I engage with various audiences through speaking engagements, media appearances, and writing to promote understanding and drive policy changes. My role involves challenging existing narratives and presenting new perspectives that foster inclusion and equity.
What advocacy are you most involved in right now and why is it vital for our society?
Currently, I am heavily involved in advocating for transgender and non-binary health equity. This work is vital because access to appropriate healthcare is a fundamental human right. Transgender and non-binary individuals often face significant barriers in healthcare settings, and addressing these disparities is crucial for our well-being and dignity. My advocacy aims to ensure that all individuals receive the care and respect they deserve.
What is the best advice you ever received, from whom, and does it still resonate with you today?
The best advice I ever received was from my mother over 22 years ago as I boarded my first overseas flight to Frankfurt, Germany for military duty. I still hear and remember her voice over the phone saying, “Always be kind and ALWAYS say thank you.” This advice has profoundly shaped my approach to life and it continues to resonate with me. Kindness and gratitude have been guiding principles in both my personal and professional interactions, helping me to build meaningful relationships and create positive change.
What is your definition of success?
Success, to me, is living authentically and making a positive impact on the world. It’s about achieving personal and professional goals while staying true to my values and helping others along the way. Success is also about resilience and the ability to overcome challenges and continue striving for equity and justice.
How do you spend a free day away from your phone, computer, and meetings?
Oh my, I don’t get many of those! However, on a free day, I enjoy spending time outdoors hiking and mountain climbing. I have climbed a mountain at least 139 times since the beginning of the pandemic. I took up mountain climbing when the gyms closed so I could maintain my Fitness. It turned out to be one of the best forms of therapy AND physical training. I also love reading and spending quality time with my dogs. My pups Duke and Tillie bring me so much joy and happiness. These activities help me recharge and find balance amidst my busy schedule.
What advice do you have for your younger self if you could go back in time?
I would tell my younger self to embrace your uniqueness and not be afraid to stand out. Trust in your journey and know that the challenges you face will shape you into a stronger, more compassionate person. Surround yourself with supportive people and never lose sight of your dreams.
What advice do you have for trans men and other young people struggling with their identities?
To trans men and young people struggling with their identities, I say: you are valid and deserving of love and respect. Seek out supportive communities and resources that affirm your identity. Remember that your journey is unique, and it’s okay to take the time you need to discover and embrace who you are. Your identity is your strength, and you have the power to create a fulfilling and authentic life.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of myself and the courage to live authentically. My journey to “become” has helped heal myself and my past trauma, and it has also helped countless others. This impact extends beyond the LGBTQIA+ community to people from all walks of life. I pride myself on finding commonality with everyone I meet, fostering understanding and connection. Living authentically has not only been a personal victory but also a way to inspire and support others in their own journeys.
What do you want to accomplish in the future?
In the future, my personal and professional goal is to become the number one talk show host in the world. This aspiration is not driven by a desire for fame or fortune, but by the potential reach and healing it offers. By achieving this, I aim to raise the collective consciousness of the earth, allowing my energy to vibrate in homes, workplaces, and countless other spaces. I want to BE love in action, using my platform to inspire, educate, and foster a sense of connection and understanding among people from all walks of life. Being the premier talk show host will enable me to continue spreading messages of love, acceptance, and inclusion on a global scale.
