Trevor: The Musical Pro-Shot Headed to Disney+
Inspired by the 1995 short film Trevor, Trevor: The Musical is receiving a pro-shot or a professionally filmed stage production heading to Disney+ on June 24th. The show follows 13-year-old Trevor and his coming to terms with his identity. The film served as the inspiration for The Trevor Project the leading suicide awareness and mental health organization for LGBTQ+ youth. The show stars breakout star Holden William Hagelberger as the titular Trevor and the book and lyrics by Dan Collins and music by Julianne Wick Davis. The show first premiered off-broadway at The Writers Theater in Chicago and gained praise for its messages of inclusion, acceptance, and the encouragement of self-discovery at a young age. Disney’s recent expansion of their catalog to include more LGTBQ+ centered stories comes at a necessary time and will hopefully lead to more progressive change and representation in children’s media.
She-Hulk Attorney-at-Law Coming To Disney+ August 17, 2022
The new trailer for Marvel’s latest show She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has just dropped stirring up excitement among Marvel fans and especially Hulk fans. In the MCU to date, there has only been one MCU Hulk film, The Incredible Hulk in 2008. The film starred Edward Norton as the titular hero but was replaced with Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers in 2012. Since then, Ruffalo has appeared as the green fighting machine in 7 other films including all the Avengers films and most memorably, Thor: Ragnorok. Now, a long-time fan favorite in the comics She-Hulk is making her MCU debut with Tatiana Maslany portraying the character. The show follows Jennifer Walters, an hustling, stressed-out attorney who after a blood transfusion has to employ the help of her cousin Bruce Banner to control her new Hulk powers. Fans are excited not only for another Hulk character to enter the mix, but one more female superhero for the MCU ranks. A movie appearance can’t be far behind for Jennifer Walters as phase four of the MCU continues to play out.
Love, Victor is Heading to Disney+ in Addition to Hulu
Love, Victor the spin-off series based on the film Love, Simon will be available to stream on Disney+ as well as on Hulu. This is insanely exciting and long-awaited news for Disney+ to include more shows featuring a queer protagonist in their catalog. The Owl House which originally appeared on Disney Channel and then became available to stream on Disney+ features two queer main characters, but still the overwhelming lack of LGBTQ+ representation in Disney films, shows, and other mediums is concerning especially in the wake of more representation on other children’s networks like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.
The first two seasons of Love, Victor premiered on Hulu and its third and final season will air on Hulu and Disney+ as the companies are affiliated with each due to Disney’s acquisition of the companies sharing Hulu’s stock with Comcast which owns 33% of Hulu. Disney has control of operating Hulu and offers their most popular streaming bundle which includes Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ for $13.99 a month. Hopefully, the addition of Love, Victor‘s final season as well as shows like The Owl House will inspire Disney to include a more diverse cast of characters in their memorable franchises and other projects.
