My Weight Loss Adventure Week Six: Being Sick

Last week there was no My Weight Loss Adventure.  This is because I was living the adventure with an illness that knocked the stuffing out of me.  In more ways than one.

It first hit my housemate d she did not feel good at all.  It lasted 48 hours and she began to feel better.  As illnesses pass from one person to another in ways only God understands, some ho, some way, that bug leapt from her to me.  We had been being careful all along because of Covid-19 but this, I guess was just easier to get.

It started with a sore throat.  Of Course, that was alarming right there.  It then went on to attack and inflame my sinuses which meant a nasty headache, and at the same time made me very congested.  And I was tired, really exhausted, even though I was sleeping through the night.  I kept a sharp eye out on my temperature, knowing a spike in that could lead to Covid-19, but it remained normal through out this, what my mother used to call, a bug.

Tylenol for Severe cold an flu worked well on some of the symptoms, Dayquil and Alka-Seltzer for colds did a good job too.  I jumped from one to the other.  I used different ones mainly because there were times I didn’t want to drink the Alka-Seltzer, but I have to say out of all of them, for me, Alka-Seltzer works the fastest and seems to do a better job at relieving the symptoms of this type of illness.  Another remedy that knocks cold symptoms out of the ball park and makes you sleep better than Nyquil is a hot toddy.  A hot toddy is made by making any kind of herbal tea, adding a tablespoon of honey, lemon juice, cinnamon, cloves and ginger and about a shot glass full of your favorite whisky or rum.  You can put more or less alcohol to your taste.  As I only use this at bed time the amount of alcohol doesn’t matter.

Let me say and with out very much shame that I am a lousy patient.  I’m grumpy and irritable when I am sick and best approached with great caution.  You’d think I was dying the way I sometimes act when I don’t feel good.  So I try to isolate so I don’t bite the wrong person’s head off.

My housemate was very good to me during my illness.  She went out and got me orange juice and anything else I needed.  She was very kind at a time when I needed kindness.

As stated above this ‘bug” lasted 48 hours, or the symptoms did.  After the symptoms left my physical strength was zapped, just like Samson after his haircut.  It took a few more days to get back to normal but I finally arrived.

Trying to eat right when your sick is almost impossible.  Whenever I’m sick my taste buds are affected, and food doesn’t taste right so following a healthy diet goes out the door.  Tea and Jam, McDonald’s Double Cheeseburgers and other unhealthy things are the only things I can get down, so that’s what I eat.  The problem has become weening myself off of the bad stuff and back to the good stuff.  I’m not quite there yet but I will be.

Next week I will get back to filling out my food diary and being responsible for what goes in my mouth.  This week I haven’t dome too bad so far.  My dinner menus are planned out thru the 25th so I should be alright.  Of course the 25th is Christmas Day and that’s for next week in the meantime, stay healthy friends
